About Redeemer

Redeemer Ann Arbor exists to magnify God’s glory and to increase our joy in him.

Redeemer Ann Arbor is a gospel-centered, authentic community that leads people to glorify and enjoy God.

We are thankful for the other churches and ministries in the area and we partner with them in fulfilling Christ’s mission. We are excited about the global reach of the mission of God through Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan students graduating and going abroad.

Our Core Principles

Focused Mission

We are committed to glorifying and enjoying God by sharing the glory of our God with the community God has placed us in in Ann Arbor. Jesus Christ came “to seek and to save the lost.”

We join our Savior in his mission as we give special focus to spreading his loving Gospel to the lost, lonely, and hurting around us. We do this by calling others to the redeeming grace of our God and by loving all as his followers in Jesus’ name.

Vibrant Worship

We are committed to glorifying and enjoying God through our worship together.

We gather as a community to hear him speak to us through his preached Word and to respond to him in our praise, confession, lament, and hope in his promises.

Sharing the
Mercy of Christ

We are committed to glorifying and enjoying God by sharing the mercy of Christ with the needs of our community.

True Spiritual life is evidenced in an outward face of love and care for others. We long for the Holy Spirit to work through us as we seek creative ways to serve those around us.

Clear Proclamation

We are committed to magnifying God’s glory and increasing our joy in Him by proclaiming Jesus Christ as the center of Scripture and our only hope.

Every part of the Bible points us to who He is and the love He offers through His life, death, resurrection, and reign. As we encounter Jesus in His Word, we are changed and sent out to make Him known with compassion, courage, and clarity.

Gospel Cooperation

We are committed to glorifying and enjoying God by maintaining a unifying gospel cooperation with other churches and para-church ministries in our community.

Jesus tells us that one sows and another reaps (John 4:37), but that we all (sower and reaper) will rejoice together. We are under no illusion that we are the only true church in Ann Arbor. Jesus Christ is using broken people (like us) to build His church so that He ultimately gets the glory, not us. We gladly embrace and work with others who are preaching the gospel of Christ.

Authentic Community

We are committed to glorifying and enjoying God by practicing authentic love. Jesus said that the world will recognize His disciples by the love they have and practice for each other. We are here to love each other and all those whom God brings into our lives.

As a church, we are striving to reflect the mosaic of various cultures and ethnicities that Jesus is weaving together for his glory; we believe true Christianity brings people from different backgrounds together in a common love for Jesus. In this love, we are striving for a diverse community united around Jesus Christ. We emphasize loving people, reaching out to people, being real with people. We will begin with those in the church, but this extends to those who are in the world as well.

What We Believe

Redeemer Ann Arbor holds to The Westminster Confession as our statement of faith, however, we honor both infant and believer’s baptism.

THE ESSENTIALS OF THE FAITH

  1. The Bible
  2. We believe the Bible is the written word of God, given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit through human authors. As the word of God, it is without error, and our only rule for faith and practice.

  3. One Triune God
  4. We believe in one God, the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To Him be all honor, glory, and praise forever!

  5. The Death & Resurrection of Christ
  6. Jesus Christ, the living Word, became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. He who is true God, became true man, united in one Person, forever. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins, according to the Scriptures. On the third day, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Mediator.

  7. The Holy Spirit
  8. The Holy Spirit has come to glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts. He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior. Indwelling our hearts, He gives new life to us, empowers and imparts gifts to us, for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth, and seals us for the day of redemption.

  9. Free Grace
  10. Being estranged from God and condemned by our sinfulness, our salvation is wholly dependent upon the work of God’s free grace. God credits His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, thereby justifies them in His sight. Only such as are born of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus Christ, become children of God and heirs of eternal life.

  11. The Church
  12. The true Church is composed of all persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit are united together in the body of Christ. The Church finds her visible, yet imperfect, expression in local congregations where the Word of God is preached in its purity and the sacraments are administered in their integrity; where scriptural discipline is practiced, and where loving fellowship is maintained. For her perfecting, she awaits the return of her Lord.

  13. The Return of Christ
  14. Jesus Christ will come again to the earth – personally, visibly, and bodily – to judge the living and the dead, and to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus,” (Rev. 22:20)

  15. The Great Commission
  16. The Lord Jesus Christ commands all believers to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world and to make disciples of all nations. Obedience to the Great Commission requires total commitment to “Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.” He calls us to a life of self-denying love and service. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10)

Our Story

In August 2015, Jim Mong resigned his position as a pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Ada, Michigan to move to Ann Arbor to plant Redeemer Ann Arbor. Bart Bryant resigned his role as an elder at Grace Baptist Church in Canton, Michigan to join Jim in this church planting work. Together, with their wives, they began meeting in the Bryants’ living room to pray and to study the Scriptures. Jim began a Bible study on the UM campus shortly after that. Step by step, God gathered a few of us together to form Redeemer Ann Arbor.

By April 2016, God had already demonstrated his kindness to us. He provided a perfect place for us to meet, and on April 10, 2016 we began evening worship services at the Lord of Light Lutheran Church on the edge of the UM campus. We had an average of 20-30 people in attendance at those services.

In March 2017, God provided a building! We purchased 611 ½ East William Street, a small historic structure built in 1878 for DKE, a fraternity on campus. The building is located where campus meets downtown, an intersection marked by activity and foot traffic. We embarked on extensive renovations, collaborating with the city to preserve the historical significance of the building.

In October 2017, Redeemer Ann Arbor formed as a church. We began with 30 members. By this time, we were meeting on campus in the Michigan League.

In March 2018, Jim led a team of 8 on a trip to Ecuador. The team focused on working with La Iglesia Filadelfia, a church of similar size and age in Ambato, Ecuador. This trip began an ongoing relationship with missions organizations in Ecuador. Jim has ministered at training endeavors in Ecuador, and we take missions trips to Ecuador during spring break each year.

We met for the first time in our new building in September 2018, rejoicing in the opportunity God has given for a more permanent location as well as increased visibility and accessibility. Our campus ministry and our international student outreach expanded. The new building made it possible for us to continue our practice of hosting a meal after the morning Worship service each week so we can meet visitors and spend time more personally with each other.

By May 2021, we had outgrown 611 ½ E. William (despite the Covid 19 pandemic causing us to meet outdoors in open air tents!), but somehow, God provided a new building for us a few blocks away at 525 Detroit Street; we purchased the building in July and began a long process of approvals from the city.  This is a historical building as well, and it allows us to more than double our capacity. We began meeting in university facilities and we continued to have lunches together in our building after the morning service.

In December 2021, Josh Welch visited and suggested the idea of beginning a Christian Study Center at the University of Michigan. After researching the concept, God directed us to Rick Ostrander at Westmont College in California who had received funding to do a feasibility study on launching a study center at Michigan. We began discussions and firmed up plans, opening the Michigan Christian Study Center in the fall of 2022. Rick assembled a steering committee which began planning, formed an independent non-profit corporation and assumed leadership of the endeavor in spring 2023. Redeemer launched, funded and led the study center for its first year of existence (2022-2023 academic year).

In May 2023, Eric and Lauren Westog moved to Ann Arbor to take leadership of Redeemer’s campus ministry.
